Wireless Services

On campus, the wireless communications spectrum usage includes:

  • Satellite downlinks/uplinks
  • Radio and television broadcasting
  • Two-way radio
  • Cellular phones
  • Wireless LANs
  • Building-to-building data links
  • Industrial strength cordless telephones
  • Differential Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Other specialized command and control applications

Some of these systems require Federal Communications Commission (FCC) licensure and others do not. Use of the limited wireless spectrum is growing at an amazing rate everywhere at MSU and new policies are being developed by key University policy entities in response to this growth.

Most MSU departments in need of wireless systems lack many of the resources required to design, install, test, and activate their own systems. MSU Telecommunication Systems stands ready to assist departments with:

  • Consulting and design, including site surveys
  • Installation
  • Testing
  • Activation
  • Coordination with the MSU Computer Laboratory
  • Coordination with MSU Physical Plant
  • Coordination with any outside vendors
  • Registration and approval, pending University policy
  • FCC licensing
